WHICH CLASSES ARE SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS?

ALTHOUGH THE FUNDAMENTALS CLASSES ARE SPECIFICALLY AIMED AT THOSE WITH LITTLE OR NO PREVIOUS GRAPPLING EXPERIENCE, BEGINNERS ARE VERY WELCOME AT ANY OF OUR CLASSES.

WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR AND BRING TO CLASSES?

TO BEGIN WITH, ALL YOU NEED IS COMFORTABLE CLOTHING (T-SHIRT AND SHORTS) AND A DESIRE TO LEARN. YOU MAY ALSO WISH TO BRING WITH YOU SOME WATER AND A TOWEL AS YOU CAN EXPECT A TOUGH WORKOUT!

IF YOU OWN A JUDO OR BJJ GI THEN THAT IS IDEAL FOR THE BJJ GI CLASSES, IF NOT THEN A T-SHIRT AND SHORTS WILL BE FINE FOR YOUR FIRST FEW CLASSES. WE HAVE SPARE GIS THAT CAN BE LOANED TO VISITORS ON REQUEST.

ALSO, IF YOU HAVE A GUMSHIELD IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO WEAR IT. WHILST THERE IS NO STRIKING IN BJJ, IT IS STILL A CONTACT SPORT AND ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN.

CAN I BUY A GI AT THE ACADEMY?

YES, WE SELL KINGZ KIMONOS, TATAMI FIGHTWEAR AND FAIXA RUA GIS, RASHGUARDS, SHORTS AND MORE. PLEASE ASK AT THE ACADEMY FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN A CLASS?

EACH CLASS WILL TYPICALLY BEGIN WITH A SHORT WARM UP, FOLLOWED BY DRILLING SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES AND THEN SPARRING.

WHAT IS SPARRING?

SPARRING CONSISTS OF UTILISING YOUR GRAPPLING TECHNIQUES TO FORCE YOUR OPPONENT TO SUBMIT (OR TAP OUT) USING ANY LEGAL JOINT LOCKS, CHOKES AND STRANGLES. THERE IS NO STRIKING (PUNCHING OR KICKING) DURING SPARRING, WHICH THEREFORE ALLOWS PRACTITIONERS TO SAFELY PRACTICE AT FULL SPEED. ADOPTING THIS APPROACH WILL ALLOW YOU TO TRAIN IN A WAY THAT RESEMBLES THE FEEL AND EFFORT REQUIRED IN REAL COMPETITION OR IN A SELF-DEFENCE SITUATION.

AT CARLSON GRACIE SURREY WE CONSIDER THAT SPARRING AGAINST A FULLY RESISTING OPPONENT IS THE BEST WAY TO TEST YOUR SKILLS AND IMPROVE YOUR TECHNIQUES, HOWEVER THE OBJECTIVE IS NEVER TO INJURE YOUR TRAINING PARTNER. ALL TECHNIQUES AND SUBMISSION HOLDS ARE TO BE APPLIED WITH CONTROL, AND RELEASED AS SOON AS YOUR OPPONENT SUBMITS.
